‘Snowflakes’ All Year Long

By Meghan Griech, Editor and Publisher, Macaroni Kid Quakertown-Doylestown April 20, 2017

Not too long ago we found ourselves with a rainy Sunday and nothing to do... according to my children. Despite each of them with a bedroom full of books and toys and a playroom full of toys, art supplies and games. But when I looked closer, the modeling clay was dried out, the paints were a mess and well… something new and fun was needed. Then I found a way to make snow… with diapers!

Here is how it goes:

1. Find a diaper. We are using disposable training pants in our house, so that is what we used. Tip: We initially tried this with swimmy diapers… it didn’t go well, so I’d skip it!

2. Cut through the diaper to loosen the ‘beads and dust’ that swell inside the diaper when it’s wet.

3. Add a couple drops of food coloring. Then add about 1/3 cup of water, or enough to wet all the diaper insides.

4.  We used rubber gloves to prevent colored fingers, but gloves or not, start mixing the ingredients until it is all combined.

5. A couple diapers are needed to really make enough ‘snow’ to make or mold anything, but my children loved this experiment.

Tip: If you add water first, then food coloring, the coloring of the diaper insides is lighter than when food coloring is added first.
